Outbound warehouse execution
Keep picks, shortages and dispatch handoffs together
Turn released demand into sequenced picks, explicit shortage decisions, verified packages and a visible dispatch handoff. A picked order is not yet a shipped order.
The App contains fictional warehouse, client, item, receipt, stock, task and dispatch records. Sign in to inspect a view or install a copy with the sample data.
Keep five handoffs visible from release to dispatch
- 01
Release the work
Use an order, transfer or batch with priority and cutoff context.
- 02
Pick from controlled locations
Show bin, SKU, quantity, sequence and any lot or serial rule.
- 03
Decide the shortage
Preserve demand while another bin, partial shipment, substitution or backorder is chosen.
- 04
Verify the package
Connect picked lines to package, count, weight or document checks required by the operation.
- 05
Confirm the handoff
Record staging and carrier or transport handoff without claiming route execution happened in the WMS.
A short pick needs a decision, not a smaller requested quantity
Requested
12 unitsThe demand released to the warehouse.
Picked
9 unitsThe quantity the operator actually found and confirmed.
Open decision
3 unitsSearch another bin, part-ship, substitute or backorder.
Manage the work that can miss the cutoff
| Signal | Question | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Unassigned pick | Who owns the released work? | Assign before queue age consumes the cutoff |
| Short pick | Is stock elsewhere, unavailable or inaccurate? | Choose the fulfillment decision and retain the reason |
| Packed but not staged | Where is the verified package? | Confirm staging location and handoff readiness |
| Staged but not dispatched | What blocks the carrier or transport handoff? | Escalate documents, load or pickup dependency |
Questions about picking and packing software
What should warehouse picking software show?
A picker needs the order or batch, bin, SKU, requested quantity, sequence and any lot or serial rule. The system must also make a short pick easy to record without pretending the full quantity was found.
How should a short pick be handled?
Retain requested and picked quantities, record the reason, and route the decision to partial shipment, substitution, another location or backorder. Do not silently reduce the order line.
What does packing verification add?
Packing verification connects the picked work to packages, staging and handoff. It helps prevent a picked order from appearing shipped before its contents, documents or carrier handoff are confirmed.
Does Jodoo optimize pick waves or carrier routes?
Not in this example. It demonstrates configurable work, shortage handling and dispatch evidence. Use a specialist WMS or transport platform for advanced wave, cartonization, rate shopping, labels and route optimization.
